Waupaca County Begins Farmland Preservation Planning Process
Waupaca County Begins Farmland Preservation Planning Process

Waupaca County will host two informational meetings on farmland preservation planning. The first meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on March 27 at the Waupaca County Courthouse (811 Harding Street, Waupaca). The second meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on March 28 at the Union Town Hall (E6592 State Road 22, Manawa).

“These meetings are a great way for the public to learn about the State of Wisconsin’s Farmland Preservation Program and about Waupaca County’s Farmland Preservation planning process. There have been numerous changes at the State level that have increased the incentive for participation in Farmland Preservation,” stated Melinda Osterberg, Waupaca County Planner.

The purpose of the meeting will be to provide information on the Working Lands Legislation which was adopted by the Wisconsin State Legislature in 2010 and to gauge interest in the Farmland Preservation within Waupaca County.

According to Mike Koles, UW-Extension Community Development Educator, “Waupaca County has had a lot of recent success addressing land use opportunities. The comprehensive planning process and the conservation easement program have both gained statewide acclaim. This was made possible through a bottom-up, citizen driven process that I foresee being repeated for the Farmland Preservation Program discussion.” The Farmland Preservation planning process will be an opportunity to implement the goals and vision set forth within the Town Comprehensive Plans and to actively protect farmland within Waupaca County.

Ron Brooks, Town of Lind dairy and grain farmer relayed that, “Farmland preservation is our chance to leave future generations a legacy instead of a liability. It is our hope that future generations will look back and be able to say that we left this land better than we found it.”
